Neighborhood Travels

Carved at Descanso Gardens!

With Halloween just around the corner, the time seemed right for a trip to Descanso Gardens’ latest event, Carved!  Due to the pandemic, I’ve been staying home much of the time.  This little outing was a real treat!  What fun it was to wander through the garden along with other families.  There were so many things to see and do!  The kids loved it!

Family-friendly

My daughter and I followed the visitors ahead of us.  We came to this pumpkin house, which is what I’m calling it.  In fact it was a wood frame decorated with pumpkins, gourds, and indian corn. As you can see by the queue,  it was an excellent place for a family photo.

The wait wasn’t long to make the short walk through the structure.  There are windows so that one can frame a shot of family members.  Of course, I had my photo taken.  Wouldn’t you?

Nearby was a maze as well as several stick sculptures.   Although the latter sounds simple, these were very detailed insects!

I had to turn the camera to get the head and wings in the shot.  Look at the materials used on the head.  Is that burlap?  How creative!

The Forest!

By far, the highlight for me was the trek through the oak forest.  I like this area of Descanso during any visit.  At night, it was sensational!  We wandered about as appropriate music accompanied our journey.  The jack o’ lanterns were scattered on the forest floor.

The lights changed color.  At times the red glow made the trees appear to be on fire.  It was a spooky feeling.  I also liked the blue and purple looks.

Is that actual mist?  I think the organizers added that as well.  It made things just that more uncertain.

Better hurry!

I won’t say too much  I don’t want to spoil all the surprises.  Carved is happening in Descanso Gardens in La Canada-Flintridge through Halloween.  It appears to be very popular, so If you’re interested, buy a ticket.  If you don’t live nearby, I suggest you find a similar event.  It was such a joy to get out and enjoy the October spirit.
