Dinosaurs and Butterflies In Los Angeles

I made a mad-dash visit to the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum yesterday because this weekend is the first ever Dino Fest!  The museum was filled with all things dinosaur and people were having a great time.  Two highlights for my group were the visit with the Jurassic Park Motor Pool and the talk given by paleontologist, Jack Horner.  My daughter is now convinced she needs to buy a jeep and repaint it.

Jack Horner gave an entertaining and informative talk about the making of the Jurassic Park movies, including film clips!  The audience loved it.  He also touched on the use of graduate students at a dig and the debate concerning whether the Tyrannosaurus Rex was the top predator or a scavenger similar to the modern day hyena.  That was a lively moment.  I’m not sure everyone is ready for that.

And at last we managed to get to the Butterfly Pavilion.  I thought for sure I would miss it this year. Instead we were able to buy tickets when the museum first opened.  Make a note, these tickets sold out fast so if you’re going to try to buy at the door, get there at opening.

The butterflies were lovely, but very lively.  The moved so quickly that many of my shots turned out to be just a bush rather than a butterfly!

Here’s one more and then I’ll quit.

The Pavilion operates on 30-minute time slots.  Our time with the butterflies went by very quickly!

The Dino Fest ends today but the Butterfly Pavilion will be an ongoing event through October 16, 2016.   These are timed tickets and I’m told online sales are sold out.  If you want to go, your best bet is to try the museum at opening.
