Los Angeles County Fair, Part 2

My recent post about the fair dealt primarily with food vendors.  This time I want to talk more broadly about what’s happening, or at least about what I saw on my recent visit.  The fairgrounds is large and not easily explored in one afternoon so I concentrated on the things I like best at the Los Angeles County Fair.

One of these is the animals in the area known as Mojo’s Wild and Crazy Lagoon.  All along this area one finds monkeys, zebra, reptiles, a lemur, and even this emu.  At least I think it’s an emu.  It certainly was big and I know it isn’t a flamingo and I don’t think it’s an ostrich.   I like its fixed stare which makes this bird seem like a dinosaur! The face of an emu at the Los Angeles County Fair

Just at the entrance to the lagoon is an area with parrots and tortoises.  Okay, I’m not certain about the birds, but I’m absolutely positive that the this is a sulcata tortoise.Sulcata Tortoise at the Los Angeles County Fair

Not far from here is the home and garden area where I enjoy wandering about just to see what flowers are being featured.  I don’t know why I do this; I don’t have a garden or a green thumb. Still the area is lovely and it often is cool which helps when September temperatures soar.  Right next to the flowers is an area for wine tasting.  I loved how they had a separate area all ready and waiting.Glasses set up for wine tasting at the Los Angeles County Fair

Before I forget I want to mention this year’s product.  There always seems to be something that everyone is wearing or carrying around.  One year it was mops; this year it’s a hat in the shape of the emoji character, A Pile of Poop.  I know it’s a rather odd thing to wear on your head, but here you have it.  And yes, I did see people proudly wearing these hats!Plush prizes on shelves at Los Angeles County Fair

I also checked out the photography competition and the home arts area.  Why I’m so enamored of the cake decorating or the quilting I’ll never know since I’m not good at either.  Still if something is well done, I like to see it.  This Russian Gingerbread House by Ginger Platt won a blue ribbon and Best of Division.   It isn’t your everyday holiday decoration.  I can’t imagine the work that went into it.  More importantly, how did she transport it to the fairgrounds?Russian Gingerbread House at the Los Angeles County Fair

As the evening settled in I was getting ready to leave.  I had already shot tons of photos but I usually wait and save the carnival lights and the rides for my last shoot of the evening.  I’ve liked the merry-go-round since I was little, so I’ll close with an image of the carousel horses.Carousel horses at the Los Angeles County Fair

The fair continues through September 25th.  The weather has been great this year.  Hope you get a chance to go out to Pomona and have some fun!
